Pollution & Solutions: Leadership for the Interlake
“Pollution and Solutions” is a two-and-a-half day residential workshop for up-and-coming leaders aged 18-35 years. The purpose of this workshop is to provide current and future Manitoban leaders with the tools, insight and connections to promote sustainable water resource and watershed management.
Using inspired problem solving amongst the group, we will work together and explore solutions to effectively manage the water resources within the Lake Winnipeg and Interlake region. Through experiential field tours (related to agriculture, flooding and wetlands) the group will be exposed to mentors who are changing the tide by implementing land-based solutions. The group will then explore, through interactive dialogue and group activities, innovative ideas for sustainable change within the region. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with local organizations and individuals leading the way in sustainable development, and peers who are ready to join you as tomorrow’s smart decision makers!
Why Lake Winnipeg?
Loading of nutrients into Lake Winnipeg has turned this once healthy water body into the most eutrophied large lake in the world – essentially, this environmental and economic life source is being suffocated. The Lake Winnipeg Basin drains a watershed containing over 6 million people, 55 million hectares of agricultural land, and 17 million livestock; the Lake itself supports a $20 million per year commercial fishery, hydroelectricity production and Aboriginal livelihoods. In short: a lot depends on this lake. Without effective remediation and change, water resources in Manitoba will continue to be severely threatened— now is the time for diverse stakeholders, generations, and communities to come together to envision inclusive, sustainable solutions.
